What are all the normal tests done on a home before buying it?

e.g. asbestos, lead pipe, water table, septic tank, blah blah blah. What do I need to know? For the record, I’m planning on tearing out or at least trumping the oil heating system with a combo of solar paneling, wind and hydro turbine and geo-thermal system. But it will be my first home purchase

Sheetrock Asbestos

Does old Sheetrock sometimes contain Asbestos?

I have old sheetrock that is cracked and peices missing in the basement of my house, I am wondering if I should be concerned, I have read that some sheetrock did contain asbestos and I also read that sheetrock did not, that the compound holding the sheetrock together may have. These peices of sheetrock are not compounded nor are they plastered they are only nailed in.

Sheetrock (aka drywall) is just compressed gypsum with paper covering it. I’ve never heard of any that had asbestos. Asbestos was usually used in insulation and roofing materials. Plus, even if there were asbestos, the way to get rid of it is not to tear it out, since that just puts it out into the air. Instead, you need to encapsulate it. All that means is paint over it, and you’ll be fine.

Asbestos Glue Removal

I need advise on asbestos removal..?

I just hired someone to remove asbestos floor tiles in my basement and i left the house and now i’m back home, and what i can see on the ground is the black glue and all windows are open.. I’m just a person who doesn’t know anything about asbestos and I wanna make sure this is proper removal, there’s dusty white choke-like material on the floor and there’s an adore that i’ve never smelled before.

please if you’re a professional in the business give me an advise on what to do..

I’m guessing the black glue does have asbestos residue.. and how do i handle the situation, i paid half of the project..
should i contact the police ? what should I do? this person is obviously not taking it seriously .. should I take it seriously? it’s in my basement, should i move away?

Who did you hire? A handyman, or an asbestos abatement company? This makes a HUGE difference.

If you hired the proper company, you have no worries. If you hired a handyman, you have a problem.

Until you decide, stay out of the cellar. You are completely safe upstairs.

If you hired a handyman, you need a lawyer, and a phone call to your insurance company.

Not to shoot you when you’re down, but the tiles were perfectly safe right where they were. They just needed to be sealed with a coat of polyurethane.

Tile Asbestos

I am wanting to remove asbestos tile from my slap floor, how do i remove the petroleum based adhesive?

If is cracked and broke up you need to have it a abated . $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If it is chipping and flaking get it real damp and use latex type gloves clean it up and put it in zip lock bags along with any thing that you used to clean it up including the gloves. Wear a good respirator. When done wet the filters in the respirator and remove them and put then in the bags too, then us a damp rag and clean the respiratory..

If it is flat and and is just ugly. Buy a good sealer and seal the floor, then install a wall to wall rug or free floating floor over it.

Polystyrene “Plastic” cement is an adhesive used for joining polystyrene parts. The cement contains a solvent that melts the surface of the plastic, allowing the two parts to fuse together. As the solvent evaporates the strength returns to the material, the components having been ‘welded’ together. As with the asbestos stuff, I don’t think the new batches of gun pestic cement has any. The last I know of were supplies that were manifactured before 1991 by subsidiaries of a certain company. These ones contained asbestos. I don’t think they do anymore. It has been rectifed. My husband might have been exposed to asbestos?

He is smashing down drywall in a 50+year old home. He was wearing a pretty good mask, but not a Hepa filter mask. Think any asbestos got past the mask and into his lungs?

If it was asbestos, the dust mask didn’t help. You have to wear a fitted HEPA respirator. However, it is unlikely there was any asbestos present. Asbestos is rarely found in home drywall and is found more in the wall joint compound, but still rarely. It is more likely in commercial settings. So if he still has access, he can take samples to a local lab for testing. There probably is no asbestos to begin with.

oh my god… contact your council they will send someone to remove it for you…..

asbestos is safe when its behind a solid surface like concrete but if its exposed do not go near it….. even air movement can create dust/ flake particles to become dislodged from it…. if these are inhaled they permanently damage your lungs … your lungs can not regenerate the parts that the particles have eaten away….

i used to work for the council and the asbestos officer gave me a long talk about it…. the longer it out in the open the more damage it will do

Blue Asbestos Pictures

What kind of breathing protection is needed for asbestos and mold?

To sum my situation up I need to go into a condemned building that has a high level of blue asbestos (over 10x the harmless daily level) and has a couple of rooms that are literally covered with mold (as in there are giant piles of mold covering the floor). Obviously a respirator of some kind is needed and I was wondering what type I would need for these sorts of conditions. For the record I (hopefully) won’t be stirring up anything, I’m just going in to get some pictures which should take a couple of hours and then I’m out.

Either an N-90 breathing mask from 3-M or P-100 and half or full face respirator would do the trick. Just make sure that it says rated for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s). If it can filter mold spores it can filter pretty much anything else as mold spores are typically 2-10 microns in size.

Also a note, I am not familiar with the place but if there is a known mold issue I would recommend a tyvek suite which you can dispose of later, gloves and goggles if you don’t get the full face respirator. The reason is that if you can see mold then it is in the air and can attach to you and spread. It can also give you ear infections and eye problems. Pretty much if you are dealing with a large problem even for just a short time better play it safe and cover everything.

Most of the minerals on your list can be many colours, the different colours caused by different impurities in them.

For example, quartz can be a wide range of colours, and 2 others on your list, amethyst and citrine, are both types of quartz. Both get their colour from iron, and if amethyst is heated it becomes citrine.

Beryl is another gem that can be various colours. Green beryl is emerald and gets its colour from chromium. Aquamarine is pale blue beryl and gets its colour from iron. Morganite is pink beryl and gets its colour from manganese.

Silver and gold are both elements, so they’re that colour because that’s how they reflect the light.

Trilobites are a type of fossil so their colour will depend on what rock they are in.

If you google them you should be able to find out which elements cause the different forms of each mineral, or look on wikipedia.

Asbestos Linoleum Removal

We have asbestos in our Linoleum…now what?

We are remodeling our kitchen and on a hunch I decided to have our linoleum tested for asbestos before we just started ripping it up. Well, we tested it, and the glue did test positive for asbestos. People keep telling us there are ways of removal to “do it yourself,” however that really freaks me out. I don’t want to die of some kind of asbestos poisoning to save some bucks.

Has anyone done this themselves or faced this problem? How do you remove asbestos linoleum yourself?
Forgot to mention…there is already tile on top of the linoleum, so we can’t just layer new flooring over it. We have to pull of the tile…and the linoleum…

Your best bet would be to hire a professional to come in there and take care of that asbestos for you.

There are ways to DIY , but some cities will require a professional to do the work. Still if you choose to DIY it will be alot of work and there are alot of procedures you need to follow so make sure you do your research.

Have I been affected by Asbestos?

So tonight me a few friends decided to foolishly enter the underground tunnels at our university. We went down several straight paths, altogether probably a mile. It was very hot in the tunnels and we were surrounded by a little steam and big white pipes which said “asbestos” on them. How To Clean Asbestos

I am frantic about possibly inhaling asbestos?

I am having remodling done in my home. The floor tile that was removed contained asbestos glue. The contactor left and did not clean up properly so I cleaned up …holy hell whats gonna happen to me. How much exposure did i need to have, etc.

Just the thought of mesothelioma is scary and I can’t fault you for feeling panicky.

I know there is Asbestos in the Artex in my house, it is all over the house, is there any help from Gov’ment?

Q. Is there help with the cost of this, as it’s in most of the rooms in our home. The walls are bulging out and flaking,in some of the rooms. I have heard that you can claim on your insurance, is this correct.

no help from anyone for artex removal , infact it has minimal content of asbestos in it an is to become declassified as hazrdous, this means using common sense when removing it by simply using a steamer and not a sander as this simply creates dust.
it really is not as dangerous in artex as people who do not know about asbestos make out there are far more deadly versions in pipe lagging and boiler house along with ships etc where it is used in full 100%quantities of blue and brown asbestos, insurance claims are not accepted as it is simply classed as a decorative finish which is not covered in any form. I actually remve the stuff for a living ,

Bad Asbestos

Is Fiber glass insulation as cancer causing as asbestos?

As a carpenter, i find myself more times than not installing fiberglass insulation. In poorly ventilated areas and sometimes for up to 3-4 straight… 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week. They make me wear a dust mask but often times i wont use it because it makes the painful job even worse sometimes. Is this stuff as bad for your lungs as some people say?

Fiberglass can be an irritant but is not listed as a carcinogen. You should read the MSDS for the product you are using. Asbestos has a different length/thickness than fiberglass that causes the asbestos to lodge in the lungs.

how do i get rid of artex on plaster board walls with little damage?

Is it possible to get rid of artex from plaster board walls with little damage? I live in a council property and accepted the house 11 years ago with artex halfway down every wall and on the ceiling in the livingroom. I have been told that I have to ask permission to remove it as it may cause damage and the council will charge me to plaster it. I cant afford to pay a plasterer to do it for me. It has already been tested and cleared of asbestos. The council wont remove it or plaster it for me and if i remove it and it causes damage they will charge me for replastering even although it was the tenant before me that put it up??????
Its definitely artex and on quite thick, have removed the dado rail which was placed just below the artex and already part of the plaster underneith has came away, I am going to try and remove some with the wallpaper steamer tomorrow n see how it goes, but hey ho if it does’nt work will just have to let the council do it n foot the bill.

There is a product on the market for plastering over it – ask in a good hardware shop – B&Q ? – it is meant to be used by amateurs – with a little care you can do it

Vinyl Floor Tiles Asbestos

Subfloor in kitchen..layers..asbestos?

house was built in 1965.
from looking at a side view of the floor in the kitchen i see the following layers working from the top down..

linoleum
linoleum
plywood
black-foam-like substance
vinyl tile
black stuff
plywood

my question is on the black-foam-like substance. it is NOT hard like a dried mastic. it is actually rubbery in feeling. could this just be a soft underlayment put down in order to put the plywood on top and then the linoleum floor?

was there ever a rubbery like material that contained asbestos in the subfloor?

Not that I have ever heard of. I would however recommend wearing a respirator in for a few bucks you can get a Tyvek suit that will cover you from head to toe and if you’re careful and bag up everything as you go and vacuum well, you should be okay even if there is some. Don’t forget the goggles and gloves.

Therefore, these inspections would likely identify any procedures that would expose tampons products to asbestos. Anyone having knowledge of tampon tampering is urged to notify FDA or a law enforcement officer.

Asbestos Panelling

asbestos issue?

My dad has recently bought a brand new apartment in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. During my holiday visit, I stayed in that apartment and accidentally realized that the ceiling panels in the bathrooms are made of asbestos while the painter came up to do some touch up jobs. I called the seller and they confirmed those materials to be asbestos (but less hazardous..stupid I know). I am pretty sure I was exposed to it during the process. I tried to contact the local health department and every other authorities I can imagine but no one seems to care, not even the residents in the building! I tried to convince my dad to sell it but he refuses. I am definitely not going near that apartment again but I am worry about my dad’s health. I also learnt that asbestos fibres can be transferred from a person’s clothing into the house and then inhalled by other family members as well.

What is the best solution for this problem? I am helpless here!

Popcorn Ceiling Asbestos?

I am moving into a home built in 1964. The ceilings have a popcorn finish that we want to remove. We do not know for sure if it has asbestos. We do not plan on having it tested. We have found someone who will scrape the ceiling for us. My question is, are we doing anything illegal by not having it tested? If in fact it does get removed and we later learn that there was asbestos, can we be liable for anything? I’ve lived in a home that had the ceilings scraped before, and chances are it had asbestos and we are doing fine. If this stuff does get removed “improperly” how long can the asbestos linger in the air and potentially cause problems?
